Podcasts I’m listening to in late 2024

Podcast chain letter

For those of you who are unawares, Doug Belshaw and I have been working together for longer than your 8th grader has been alive. Yesterday he posted about his podcasting habits, after Bryan Alexander posted about his podcasting habits, so now I’m posting about my podcasting habits and I hope that someone else in this indie-web network of ours then posts about their podcasting habits. Keep the chain alive.

I don’t listen to podcasts all too often, truth be told. Over the past couple of years I’ve slowly increased my intake though. There are really only three scenarios in which I might be found listening to a podcast:

  • Purposefully as I walk to my office and/or just go for a walk
  • Distractedly as I force myself to clean my place
  • Rarely when cooking with my partner

PodcastAddict is my app of choice and I listen alone through my skullcandy sesh evos or on my Tribit StormBox Micro2 in the kitchen. For whatever reason, PodcastAddict won’t cast to the ChromeCast that drives the living room speakers though it does have the button.

Just yesterday I stumbled upon Vox’s the Gray Area and I’ve listened to 3 recent episodes, America’s reactionary moment, the antidote to climate anxiety, and how to feel alive. They were all pretty good.

I had a moment of grief about a month ago when the 13 year old podcast Oh No Ross and Carrie came to an end. I have no idea how many episodes of pseudoscience explorations I listened to, but a lot. They “show up so [we] don’t have to” going undercover in things like Scientology, chiropractors or pyramid-shaped esoterics. Absolutely hilarious.

Philosophy bites, Stuff you should know and You are not so smart are staples, and I listen to the Rest is politics and the Art of Manliness (such an unfortunate name) fairly regularly. I used to listen to this British variety kind of show called the Guilty Feminist but sometime last year they got a new co-host and I lost interest. Then there’s Tara Brach, a yogi(?) with a soothing voice and adorable dad-joke style intros that guide the listener through reflective meditations.

Recently, I’ve listened to a few episodes from an anarchist podcast called Live like the World is Dying and episodes from Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000.

Those are some of the regular podcasts, but like Dr Belshaw, I have a bunch more that I wander into from time to time. And, of course, you should check out the Tao of WAO, our podcast about the intersection of technology, society, and internet culture – with a dash of philosophy and art for good measure.
